ACLU Hits Single-Payer

The ACLU has a frightening web animation predicting the future of pizza delivery in a society that shows complete disregard for the right to privacy.

Josh Gerstein at Politico wonders if the references to national health insurance aren’t a critique of a single-payer system.

Ben Nelson Runs Ad Against Liberal Groups

Liberals should know something is amiss in their thinking when a Democratic Senator pushes back against liberal ads with one of his own.  Keep in mind Nelson is not even up for reelection next year.

Healthcare “War Room” For House Dems

In an attempt to fight back against claims from angry constituents, House Democrats have set up a war room.  The goal is to provide members with answers to policy questions while they’re home over August recess, as well as monitor and respond to any media attacks.

House Democratic leaders have set up a healthcare “war room” to help their rank-and-file members navigate a tumultuous August in which they find themselves on the defensive on their signature issue.

The effort is being run out of Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s (D-Md.) office, but is being manned around the clock by a rotation of leadership and key committee staff members, according to leadership aides.

Although the war room, or “healthcare hotline,” is primarily designed to give members the ability to get immediate health policy answers and updates from leadership offices, top Democrats are also planning to use it to help their colleagues respond effectively to political and press attacks, if necessary.

“The news is being monitored very closely,” a leadership aide said in describing the various functions of the healthcare hotline.

F-Bomb Rahm Slams Dem Infighting

This morning we learned that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel told liberal interest groups to stop targeting moderate House and Senate Democrats.  Apparently, Emanuel became very fired-up and made it clear the Administration was not pleased with their attacks.

Greg Sargent reports:

Sources at the meeting tell me that Emanuel really teed off on the Dem-versus-Dem attacks, calling them “f–king stupid.” This was a direct attack on some of the attendees in the room, who are running ads against Dems right now.

Emanuel also indicated the White House is very concerned about losing the healthcare debate.

“He started out with, `We’re 13 and 0 going into health care,’” one source at the meeting said, meaning that Rahm was touting the White House’s string of pre-health care legislative victories.

“This momentum is necessary to do all these other things. We have a lot of momentum right now, and any loss spoils that momentum that we’ve built up,” was how the source described the gist of what Rahm said.

McCaskill Says Protesters Are Real People With Real Concerns

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) has repudiated Democratic leadership claims that grassroots protests at healthcare town hall meetings are “manufactured.”  She has tweeted twice on the subject, praising ordinary citizens for exercising their rights:

Real grassroots on both sides of the healthcare issue, both sides organizing. Yay to both, yay for democracy, hope both are civil and polite.

I disagree that the people showing concern over some healthcare proposals are “manufactured” Real folks, strong opinions.

In contrast, here’s what the DNC has to say:

“This mob activity is straight from the playbook of high-level Republican political operatives,” the Democratic National Committee says in a new Web video. “They have no plan for moving our country forward, so they’ve called out the mob.”

Reid: We’ll Use Reconciliation If We Have To

On Monday, Sen. Chuck Schumer indicated Democrats would force through health reform with budget reconciliation if a compromise couldn’t be reached.  Sen. Harry Reid tried to back away from that today, but he essentially reaffirmed Schumer’s claim.

“We’re not even discussing [it],” Reid told reporters Thursday. “We believe health care should be bipartisan. We believe we have the opportunity to do that.”

But when asked whether the option was on the table, as Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said earlier this week, Reid quipped: “I’ve never known Schumer to say anything wrong.”

“Get that down,” Schumer joked.

Reid added: “We don’t want to use reconciliation unless we have to. I hope we don’t have to.”

RNC Transfers Angry Callers To DNC

After a DNC web video told liberals to complain to the RNC over protests at healthcare forums, the RNC set up their phone system to reroute the callers—to the DNC.

At the end of the video, the DNC instructs people to call the Republican National Committee to express outrage. Callers who dial the RNC’s main number to voice their concern about the DNC’s charges are told to press 1, which sends them to the DNC’s main switchboard.

RNC Chairman Michael Steele took credit for the idea:

“I thought it was a good idea,” Steele said. “Don’t sit there and think you’re going to direct a bunch of angry liberals to call the RNC when I know full well what that’s all about. I get the joke. My response was, talk to your own party, because they’re the ones ginning this up.”

Boxer Says Protests Are Fake; Kagen Blames Insurance Companies

The town hall protests continue as Congressmen return to their districts.  Last night, Rep. Steve Kagen (D) faced tough criticism in Green Bay.

Kagen chose not to listen to his constituents.  He claims the insurance industry was behind the disruption at the meeting, and he plans to continue backing the public option.

Meanwhile, Sen. Barbara Boxer says the protesters are fakes.  She knows this because they’re too well dressed.  Apparently, only poor people with no fashion sense would ever question their elected officials at a town hall meeting.

Watch closely in the Kagen video.  I think those folks look like average Americans who are angry that someone like Barbara Boxer wants to dictate where they get their medical care.  I can state with near certainly that no one was wearing Dolce & Gabbana.  Boxer, on the other hand…
