Typically, one can assume there will be very light news coverage on a holiday.  Today was a small exception because of yesterday’s baffling news from Sarah Palin (I’ll have some commentary on this later).  Overall, however, not much happens on a day like today.  Besides Palin, you’ll notice there is only one topic that received much coverage in the clips today—the War on Terror.  And this is true of any holiday, whether it’s Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, or Independence Day, we can always know our soldiers do not rest.

While our country slows down for this holiday weekend, our troops are halfway around the world fighting to keep us free.  Two Americans were killed in Afghanistan today, and we can expect the Taliban to carry out more attacks in the weeks ahead.  These brave men and women put their lives on the line to uphold our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  This Independence Day, let’s remember the sacrifice that they are making and be grateful for the freedom they preserve.

And I can’t call in sick on Mondays when the weekend’s been too strong,

I just work straight through the holidays,

And sometimes all night long.

I’m an American soldier, an American,

Beside my brothers and my sisters I will proudly take a stand,

When liberty’s in jeopardy I will always do what’s right,

I’m out here on the front lines, sleep in peace tonight.

American soldier, I’m an American,

An American,

An American Soldier
